Behind the Blog: Meet Amie—Lawyer, Negotiator, Privacy Professional, Traveler, and Poler

Hey there! I’m Amie Rose Lisking Onda, and welcome to my little corner of the internet! I’m a dual-licensed lawyer in both Ontario and the Philippines, and a privacy professional.

My legal journey began when I was 10, during a school activity where each of my classmates shared what we wanted to be in the future. Backstory: my father, who hadn’t finished school but had always dreamed of becoming a lawyer, instilled that ambition in me. So that’s what I said: “I want to become a lawyer.” Fast forward 15 years, and I did become one.

I knew in my heart there was something more beyond the small-town Philippine countryside, so I went abroad, spent a year in New York taking an interior design course, followed by a Master of Laws in London—one of the best years of my life! In 2014, I returned to the Philippines to start my own practice. I took on everything—homicide, medical malpractice, corporate disputes, indigenous rights, and even the occasional drug case. Eventually, I joined the Philippine Court of Appeals as a Court Attorney, where I drafted decisions on cases brought for appeal or judicial review.

After the retirement of my beloved boss, Court of Appeals Executive Justice Edgardo A. Camello, I surprised and saddened my family and friends by deciding to immigrate to Canada. My plan? To trade in my suits for flannels and become a forest lumberjack. But fate had other ideas, and I found myself right back in the legal world, this time as a lawyer in Ontario! I had the privilege of training under an incredible criminal defence lawyer, to whom I am eternally grateful.

But wait, there’s more!

When I’m not buried in books, I’m out exploring the world—I’ve traveled to over 50 countries, soaking up different cultures, histories, architecture, and wine! (Well… that was before I made the big move to Canada.) Now that I’m in Toronto, my globe-trotting has taken a little pause. But that doesn’t mean I’m not living my best life! I’ve found a new love in pole sport, which, like travel, brings me a sense of adventure and discovery.

Travel adventures and pole sport have shaped how I see the world, making me adaptable, open-minded, and always up for the next challenge.

So, welcome to my blog, The Counterintuitive Theory, where I share my thoughts on privacy, negotiation, law, and anything else on my mind—maybe even travel and lifestyle. Grab a coffee, tea or wine, and join me as we dive into the ever-evolving world of law and life together.

Cheers,

Amie
